The Warrior

She sat by herself, admiring her prize;
The war-torn girl with emerald eyes.
It was quiet now, for the first time in years,
Though the screams of the dying still rang in her ears.

A faint, orange glow illuminated the night;
The early beginnings of a new morning's light...
"It's over now," her words breaking the silence;
All that was left were the remnants of violence.

She got what she wanted, an end to the pain;
No more innocents suffering - no more dying in vain.
Peace was restored but the cost was immense;
Our children's futures were the ultimate expense.

The masses were saved - their souls were set free;
The world, however, left a hellscape; empty.
Devoid of all life, whether human or beast;
Every living thing had all but deceased.

Staring into the darkness of the landscape below,
She reminisced about the world she used to know.
"Never thought that I'd see this day come."
"I'd never believe-," but she bit her tongue.

What she couldn't say was that she was the slayer,
Of souls that were tainted, in need of a savior.
The Archangel, Deathbringer, Princess of Darkness;
These titles she bore didn't give much catharsis.

Her fate had been sealed in her thirty-third year;
That was the time her destiny became clear.
A soul can only survive so much violation
Before it succumbs to demoralization.

The Gods hear the cries of the lost and the damned,
But no one could have known the fate of this lamb.
She wished for the end to her pain and her suffering,
"No matter the cost," was her unconscious offering.

This girl's tenacity, intense and unassuming,
Once were her strengths, now became her undoing.
The Gods heard her call from the infinite beyond;
She was granted their power - her will was her bond.

This was her destiny, from before time immemorial;
One warrior to bring about the end of all evil.
A world born in chaos, corrupted by greed,
Bred in destruction; its fate guaranteed.

Smoke now in the air, with the strong smell of blood;
A light, chilling rain turned the ashes to mud.
Sacrifices were made, friends and family were dead;
The only thing left was to sever her own head.

"Before I end this," she asked without warning,
"Grant me one last request, and wait until morning?"
"Come, sit with me," she said with a smile.
"Let's watch the world burn together for awhile."
