The Fool

I thought I had left you
In those dark, solemn woods
On the night that my soul had died.

But it wasn't you
I left in that place
Just my doubts and the tears that I cried.

Walking away
Seemed so easy at first
Until I looked back once again.

That fatal mistake
My eternal curse
For all my intentions were slain.

I begged and I pleaded
To get through the night
Without your whispers in my ears;

I thought that, if only
My dreams could suffice
I'd survive the rest of my years.

The sound of your voice
And touch of your skin
Could just be pictures on the wall.

I wasn't counting
On the new morning's light
Becoming my ugly downfall.

A fresh start, it seems
Is never enough
To take those memories away.

Because, before long
I'd forgotten myself
Confined to this grave where I lay.

It was your smile
Those glimmering eyes
That finally did me in.

They called to me
From beyond time and space
As I turned and made my final sin.

And, just like before
Your enchanting gaze
Pulled me to the depths of this lake.

Now I lay here
Beneath the dark water
My soul watching this grave mistake.

The surface, it seems
Hid a monster beneath.
The extent of our love was empty.

And now, only darkness
Remains in my heart.
As below, so above, mote it be.
